Piper Hugh Deery

I am the sixth of seven pipers in four generations of Deery pipers and have been playing the pipes both socially and competitively since the age of 12.
After a young childhood of piano an guitar lessons, and infrequent lessons on the chanter, my formal tuition began with the late Honorary Pipe Major Jim Tudhope at the Standard Triumph Pipe Band, when my father, now Pipe Major Vincent Deery brought me to band practices on Wednesday and Friday Nights around the age of 11. A quick learner, I was soon playing with the band competitively, placing well in a number of competitions both with the band and as a soloist.
With the band I learned Scottish music, while at home I learned Irish music from various books and loose sheet music passed down through the generations found around the house. Having moved to university I now find less time to play with the band, but do still return for important occasions. Christmas 2017 was a highlight, where for the second time we supported Andre Rieu on stage at the Birmingham LG arena during his world tour. Outside of the band I regularly play at funerals, weddings, parties and many other engagements, as well as offering online tuition.
You can also see me presenting coverage of the Piping Live! International Piping Festival, and the World Pipe Band Championships from the National Piping Center and Glasgow Green every August.
